Weekly Summer Link-Up: My Teaching Quirk

So excited to be linking up with I Heart Grade 3 again this week for her Weekly Summer Link-Up party!

This week's link-up is all about my teaching quirk. It took me some time to come up with one... yes, because I have WAY too many! I tried to think about what other teachers in my building would say if they were asked and only one thing came to mind...

Fonts!

I am completely obsessed with fonts. I know that there are several of us font junkies out there but I may take it to the next level (actually Mollie too, but I don't want to throw her under the bus so I will focus on my own illness). Here is why I think this is by far my most outrageous quirk:

1. If our district sends us something to read in order to prep for a PD, I have to change the font before printing... I HAVE TO! Of course then I am embarrassed by my level of crazy and hide it shamelessly so my colleagues don't see it during the actual PD.

2. If I forget something on the printer and my name is nowhere to be found on the document, 9 times out of 10 the person who finds it is able to bring it to me without question that it is mine. We have about 30 people who are able to print to our printer so... yeah.

3. I have a mild panic attack every spring knowing that the district is going to come in to ghost our computers and that there is a possibility that I will lose all of my babies... um... I mean fonts.

4. Typically in any given year I have to ask our tech department to up the memory space on my drive because it takes up so much space saving everything as a word document AND a PDF document. It is necessary because if I need to print something from the computer lab, it won't have my fonts and if I need to send something to someone via email, they won't have my fonts and therefore I can only print/send a PDF.

5. Finally, when I start a new document it takes me WAY more time than I have to choose just the right font. Of course I have my favorites but I can't help but give some of the other fonts a fair chance to shine!

So there it is... my teaching quirk that makes my colleagues just shake their head and laugh.

(Is it sad that I am desperately hoping that some of you will leave some of your favorite fonts in the comments JUST IN CASE I am missing out on some great fonts?!? Yes! It is an illness!!!)

  1. Hi gals!

Thanks for linking up again! It's great to have you!

I'm thinking you have just coined a new term - "font babies"! LOVE IT! You should pitch that idea to Kimberly Geiswein! I'm sure she can come up with a font for that name!

Fonts are awesome and bring such character to pages! Which ones are your favourites?

  2. I love it! I have my own tried and true favorites that I use on my classroom newsletters, powerpoint lessons and of course my tpt products! One of my most treasured fonts was a free download from tpt seller Lovin Lit and is called Hello Typewriter! Love the term "font babies!" lol

    1. I am going to head over to Lovin Lit to check out her fonts! Thanks for the tip! (However, my tech department and teaching partners may not thank you... I am not going to be very productive if I keep adding fonts to my collection!) Is there a limit to how many fonts you can have on your computer!?!?

  3. I love this! I love fonts like I love my clipart, but I have a love hate relationship with fonts. My school system does not allow us to add ANYTHING to our computers without an administrative password which I do not have. It is also sooooo hard to get a tech to help with something like adding fonts so I cannot use any fun fonts at school :( However, I love using them on my personal computer and my TPT resources! My favorite set is from Teaches Third in Georgia Breakfast Buffet (its a free set too!)

    1. I CAN NOT EVEN IMAGINE!!!! I would totally have to befriend someone from tech to help me out. I know what you mean though, the first time I looked at tech and asked in my most terrified voice "Will ghosting the computer mess with my fonts?" they looked at me like I was crazy! Some people just don't understand! I am excited to check out Teaches Third in Georgia's store for fonts! Thanks!!

    1. I am so with you on the ComicSans! Mollie and I have a third teaching partner who happens to be a guy. At first I think he thought Mollie and I were a little nuts but I recently found some of his stuff on the printer and it had the cutest fonts!!! I knew we would bring him over to the dark side! :)

    1. That is so true! You are right! Even my kids pick up on my fonts. They are always asking what they are called! :)

  8. I LOVED reading your post!! I too am a card-carrying Font Addict member!! :-) I love using different cute fonts, and my principals always say that everything I send home totally seems so 'kindergarten' because of the cutesy fonts! I bought an external hard drive for my fonts so that I never have to worry about them being erased!! I LOVE all three volumes of Cara Caroll's CC Fonts as well as fonts from Miss Galvin Learns (MGL Fonts).
I'm so glad I got to 'meet' you through these link ups!!

    Warmest Wishes,

    1. I am so glad we are "meeting" through the link up too! That has to be the best part of participating in these! I will have to check out Cara Caroll's fonts! I love her stuff but I teach upper ele so I do not have a need for her teacher resources. Fonts on the other hand... :)
